Reviewing log files for Rational Asset Manager

You can review the available log files to monitor your system and identify issues that may need to be addressed.

Logging can be used for monitoring and debugging IBM® Rational® Asset Manager. Logging tracks ordinary Rational Asset Manager user operations as well as any errors that occur while Rational Asset Manager is running. By default, logging is enabled for Rational Asset Manager and for IBM WebSphere® Application Server.

As you monitor your system, check web server log files for errors and server restarts. Also review system log files, which are in the following location: \IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\AppSrv01\logs.

Rational Asset Manager logging

Logging is on by default and includes separate index and server logs:
  • ramJobServerDebug.txt
  • indexJobServerSystemErrLog.txt - There is one of these log files for each indexer instance.
The main server logs are located under the log server directories (for example <install path>/logs/server1 and include these log files for each server:
  • SystemOut.log
  • SystemErr.log
  • ramDebug.log
To download log files directly from the Rational Asset Manager web client:
  1. Log into Rational Asset Manager as a repository administrator.
  2. Click Administration.
  3. In the Repository Administration sidebar, click Tools.
  4. In the Logs section, select the log file to download:
    • Click ramDebug.log to view the log file. If you are on a WebSphere Application Server cluster, the log file will only be for the server instance that you are currently connected to.
    • To download a .zip file with all the logs that you might need for IBM support, click the appropriate Support logs link. You can download the log files that have changed today, in the last days, in the last 30 days, or all of the log files.

In the Logs section there is also asset index error information available. You can also view a list of assets that could not be fully indexed due to an error by clicking Partially indexed assets.

WebSphere Application Server logging

You set up and configure WebSphere Application Server logging by using the WebSphere Application Server Administration console. You can use this URL to access the WebSphere Application Server Administration Console: http://<server name>:<admin console port number>:/ibm/console where server name is the name of the Rational Asset Manager server system, and admin console port number is the Administration console port number (13060 by default with Rational Asset Manager, or 9060 for other WebSphere Application Server versions). The location of the log files are under these directories:
  • For WebSphere Application Server:<install path>\IBM\WebSphere\AppServer\profiles\AppSrv01\logs
  • For the default Rational Asset Manager installation with the embedded version of WebSphere Application Server: <install path>\common\eWAS\profiles\profile1\logs
