Creating repository libraries

You can create libraries to organize, describe, and create versions of assets and asset metadata such as categories, types, relationships, and attributes.

Before you begin

To work with repository libraries, you must be a repository administrator.

About this task

With repository libraries, you can manage assets and meta in the following advanced ways:
  • Although assets must have version numbers, if you use a repository library, you can apply a version number to a collection of assets or asset metadata.
  • You can use libraries to apply versioning to asset metadata and collections of assets.
  • With a library, you can quickly add or remove assets or asset metadata from active use on the Rational® Asset Manager repository.
  • To copy collections of assets or metadata across Rational Asset Manager repositories, you can export and import repository libraries.
Be aware of the following restrictions with repository libraries:
  • When you add an asset or an asset type to a library, also include all the custom asset, attributes, categories, and relationships that the asset or asset type requires.
  • Before version 7.5, enabled libraries could not share the same asset or element of asset metadata. As of version 7.5, libraries with the same elements can both be enabled, but only the most recently enabled version of the elements will be active on the repository.

Procedure

To create a library:

  1. Log on to the Rational Asset Manager web client as a repository administrator.
  2. Click Administration.
  3. In the Repository Administration sidebar, click Libraries.
  4. On the Libraries page, click New Library.
    Create a new library link.
  5. On the New Library page, type a Name, Version, and Description.
  6. Add asset types, category schemas, asset attributes, and relationships to the library.
    1. In the section of the metadata type that you would like to add, click the icon near the section title. A window that lists the repository metadata of that type opens.
    2. Select the asset types, category schemas, asset attributes, or relationship types that you want to add to the library. You can only add metadata that is not in another active library.
    3. Click Finish.
  7. Add individual assets to the library.
    1. From the New Library page, in the Assets section, click the magnifying glass icon magnifying glass icon. The Assets page opens.
    2. Find assets by using the filters or the advanced search, or by typing keywords.
    3. Click the asset name for the asset that you want to add to the library. The asset's details page opens.
    4. In the upper-right corner of the main navigation, click Tasks > Add Asset.
      Create a library menu

You will see a confirmation message that the asset has been added to the library:

      Add asset success message
  8. Alternatively, use asset searches to add all of the assets that are returned by a search to the library.
    1. From the New Library page, in the Assets section, click the magnifying glass icon magnifying glass icon. The Assets page opens.
    2. Find assets by using the filters or the advanced search, or by typing keywords.
    3. To add all of the assets that the search found, click Tasks > Add all results. You will see a confirmation message that the assets have been added to the library:
      Add all results success example
Note: Adding many assets to a library can take several minutes. Wait until you see a confirmation message before you leave the page.
  9. Optional: Repeat steps 6, 7, or 8 to add as many assets or metadata types as you need to satisfy the requirements of the library. As you add assets to the library, associated asset types, categories, relationships, and custom attributes (if any) will be automatically added to the library.
  10. After you add the assets to the library, click Tasks > View Library
  11. On the New Library page, confirm that the library is complete. If you need to remove an asset or metadata type, select the item you want to remove and then click Remove. If you cannot select or remove a type of metadata, it is either directly or indirectly dependent on another type of metadata that you must remove first. For example, you may have to remove an asset type in order to remove its related asset attributes.
  12. Optional: In the Library Actions toolbar, click Export to export the library as an archive. If you would prefer not to enable the library on the repository at this point, click Cancel.
  13. Click Create and Enable to save the library and enable it on the repository.

What to do next

On the Libraries page, you can view your saved libraries or import other libraries.

Click on a library Version number to disable, edit, or export a library.

Only one version of a library can be enabled at any time. Click View All to see disabled libraries and prior versions of enabled libraries.
