Lesson 4.1: Creating complex lifecycle conditions

You can add conditions to apply master and community lifecycles to certain asset types. As you add more asset types and categorizations for the lifecycle, the conditions become more complex.
Before you begin:
  1. Create a list of the asset types and categorizations for this lifecycle to apply to.
For example, for a lifecycle to apply to all possible assets that are slide documents, you might include the following asset types and categorizations:
    • The Presentation asset type
    • The Design asset type and the Slides categorization
    • The Documentation asset type and either the Presentation categorization or the Slides categorization
  2. Place the list items into a formula or a tree diagram to visualize how the conditions can be structured in Rational® Asset Manager.
A formula for applying the lifecycle to all slide documents might look like this example:
    • [Asset type] [Is] [Presentation]
    • [Asset type] [Is] [Design] AND [Categorization] [Is] [Slides]
    • [Asset type] [Is] [Documentation] AND ([Categorization] [Is] [Presentation] OR [Categorization] [Is] [Slides])
A tree diagram for applying the lifecycle to all slide documents might look like this example:
  3. Identify primary conditions and nested conditions. In this example, the primary conditions are the asset types and the nested conditions are the categories. This division might not apply to all scenarios, but is used here to differentiate between primary and nested conditions.
  4. In the web client, open the Conditions section of a lifecycle:
    • For a lifecycle at the community level, click Administration > Communities > Community > Lifecycles, where Community is the name of a community that you administer.
    • For a lifecycle at the master level, click Administration > Lifecycles.
  5. Select a lifecycle or click New Lifecycle to create a lifecycle.
  6. In the general settings, locate the Conditions section.
  7. Create the conditions in the lifecycle. For a demonstration of how to create the conditions, watch this Show Me video.
After you determine which asset type and categorization combinations to add as conditions for your lifecycle, you are ready to create the conditions in the lifecycle.

Lesson checkpoint

You planned the conditions for a lifecycle and created them in Rational Asset Manager.
