IBM® Tivoli® Change and Configuration Management
Database (CCMDB) with Tivoli Release
Process Manager can use IBM Rational® Asset Manager as a
definitive library. You can set up multiple definitive libraries in
a CCMDB repository by using different Rational Asset Manager repositories, differently
configured integration modules, or other types of repositories.
About this task
A definitive library is a library that stores
and protects definitive authorized versions of all software configuration
items (CIs). It is a physical library or storage repository where
master copies of software versions are placed.
A definitive
library is defined by the following characteristics:
- It is part of the content management system
- It contains definitive versions of all media configuration items
- It is separate from development, test, or live storage areas
- It includes license documents
- It includes documentation
- It includes a physical storage
- It is strictly controlled
- It is the foundation for release management and deployment management
By establishing Rational Asset
Manager as a definitive library, you can track software images through
development, review, and approval processes and then specify the approved
software images as belonging to the CCMDB definitive library.
To configure CCMDB to use
a Rational Asset Manager
repository as a definitive library:
- Install an integration module in CCMDB so that CCMDB can search
the Rational Asset Manager
repository for software images.
- Create a discovery library adapter (DLA) output file, which defines
the assets that will be in the definitive library.
- Load the DLA output file into Tivoli Application
Dependency Discovery Manager (TADDM).
TADDM is a discovery mechanism
for CCMDB. It discovers hardware, software, and logical entities
(such as web servers and web containers).
TADDM creates actual
CIs in CCMDB for the items it discovers. Actual CIs are
CIs that CCMDB does not manage. Authorized CIs are related
to actual CIs; authorized CIs are managed by CCMDB.
TADDM creates
an actual CI for the Rational Asset
Manager repository as a definitive library so that CCMDB can use it
as a definitive library. When Rational Asset
Manager publishes itself to TADDM, it also publishes its assets. As
a result, Rational Asset
Manager and the assets in its repository become actual CIs. When
an asset is brought in to CCMDB from the Rational Asset Manager definitive library,
an authorized CI is created and linked to the actual CI (if the actual
CI was created from TADDM).
- Create an operational management product (OMP) by using the Tivoli Integration Composer (ITIC)
adapter.
Note: You can create an OMP from the Create Connection page
in the web client. By creating an OMP this way, you do not need to
create a DLA file, load the DLA file into TADDM, and use the ITIC
adapter to create the OMP.
- Configure the integration module in CCMDB to link to the OMP.
- Define an end point.
- Create a definitive library.
