Creating a connection to a Rational Asset Manager repository

Once you have installed the Rational® Asset Manager Eclipse client to an existing version of Eclipse, you must create a connection to a Rational Asset Manager repository. After you create this connection, you can work in the Asset Management perspective.

About this task

You can use the Rational Asset Manager Eclipse client with a Rational Asset Manager server of the same release version and one release version prior to that. Release versions include the original release and its fix packs. For example, you can use a Rational Asset Manager Eclipse client of version 7.1.1 with a Rational Asset Manager server of versions 7.1.1, 7.1.0, and 7.1.0.1.

Important: You must be a registered user before beginning this task. You can register on the homepage of the Rational Asset manager web client.

Procedure

  1. From the File menu, click File > New > Asset Management Repository Connection.
  2. Enter your connection information in the New Asset Management Repository Connection window:
    1. Open the Rational Asset Manager web client, and then click the Help icon and Extensions.
    2. In the Eclipse Client Plug In section, copy the Repository Location URL for the repository instance and paste it in the URL field.
    3. Log in with your Rational Asset Manager user name and password.
Note: To hide your user name and use the repository anonymously, check the Anonymous login check box.
      New Asset Management connection properties
  3. Optional: You can rename the connection in the Name field, and specify if you want to save your password and validate the connection. You can also specify whether the repository connection is automatically logged in or out when the workspace starts by checking Automatically log in at startup.
  4. Click Finish to create the connection.
  5. Click OK to confirm that the connection was created successfully. The connection name is displayed in the Asset Repository view.

What to do next

Repeat these steps for each available Rational Asset Manager repository. You can then work with multiple connections as needed.

A multi-host environment is a system with multiple Rational Asset Manager repositories. Working in a multi-host environment may require you to create multiple Rational Asset Manager repository connections and work with more than one connection at a given time, or to select different connections to perform different tasks. For example, when you search for assets you can specify more than one connection or select all repository connections to search. When submitting an asset, the asset is associated with only one repository and cannot be moved from one repository to another.

You can log out of repository connections to disconnect workspace assets from the server, edit disconnected assets in offline mode, and after you log in again, you can send workspace changes to the server. From an existing connection, right-click it and select Logout.
