Differences between asset versions and artifact versions

When integrating Rational® Asset Manager with software control management systems such as Rational Team Concert, Rational ClearCase, Unified Change Management, and CVS; it is important to understand the differences between the versions of assets and artifacts in Rational Asset Manager and the versions of files in the software control management system.

When Rational Asset Manager integrates with a software control management system, the software control management system continues to store and manage files according to its normal processes. When an asset is created in the Rational Asset Manager repository, the artifacts that are created from particular versions of software control management files are stored in the repository. References to the files in the software control management system are maintained.

The version numbers of assets in Rational Asset Manager and the version numbers of artifacts are independent. When artifacts are added to an asset from an software control management system, the version number of the artifact is the same as the version of that file in the software control management system.

Your organization can determine how to assign and maintain asset version numbers. For example, after your organization establishes a policy on assigning and updating asset version numbers, then this policy can be displayed on the community home page for all community members to see.

You should also consider structural changes and non-structural changes when determining how to maintain asset versions. Structural changes to an asset require a new asset version, but non-structural changes do . For example, structural changes might include such changes as: Non-structural changes might include such changes as:
