About this task
Because Remote System Explorer accesses IBM® i servers, check for any firewalls between your local workstation
and the IBM i server
to make sure they are configured to allow communications to pass through.
The firewall needs to pass traffic through on the ports that the client and
server use; instead of blocking traffic on those ports. The IBM Toolbox for Java™ handles
the communications to and from your i server, using http://www.ibm.com/systems/i/software/toolbox/faqports.html.
- The first thing you can do is check your TCP/IP access to the IBM i server.
Open a command prompt and enter
ping hostname
where hostname is
the name of your i server.
If you can not ping your i server
then you have a connectivity problem.
- If you can ping your server, but continue to have a problem, you
can verify your IBM i connection.
In the Remote Systems view, right-click one of your subsystems, such as Objects,
and select Verify Connection. The dialog box verifies
your connection, and notifies you if you need any PTFs. More information on
verifying connections is below.
- Some components will need additional program temporary fixes (PTFs). To
find more information about any required i server PTFs:
- Open the Remote System Explorer perspective (if it is not already open)
by selecting and select Remote
System Explorer. The name of the current perspective is shown
in the top left corner of the title bar for the Window.
- Create a connection to your i server
by expanding .
- Expand your new connection and right click on Objects.
- Select Verify Connection from the menu. This displays
a dialog that shows which required PTFs are already installed on the system
and which ones are missing.
One additional local port that should be opened is port 4300,
which the STRRSESVR command uses from the workstation, to
monitor "call backs" from the i server
to your local workstation. See also Port information.
