There are two ways to work with source on a remote server. You
can access and update individual files on the server, (through the Remote
System Explorer or a command shell), or, you can download a selection of files
into a local project, work with the source locally, and then export or synchronize
the source again with the remote server. The second method is advantageous
for more managed project or team development, because you can perform local
or remote builds of the source, move the selection of files from server to
server, work with the files while disconnected, and so on.
About this task
To import resources into the workspace:
Procedure
- Make sure that you first have a local project in your workspace
to contain the files. To create a local project:
- Open the Navigator view. From the workbench menu, click Window
> Show View > Other . In the dialog box, expand General,
click Navigator and click OK.
- From the workbench menu again, click File > New >
Project. In the dialog box, expand General,
click Project, and click Next.
- Type a name for your project in the Project Name field.
- Click Finish. The new project is added
to the Navigator view.
- Right-click your project and select Import.
(You can also click from the workbench menu.) The Import wizard opens.
- Select Remote file system. Click Next.
The Remote file system page opens.
- Beside the From directory field, click Browse.
Here is where you can browse to the remote server files that you want to import
into your local project. When you click Browse, you
can navigate to a server that is already defined with a server connection
(from the Remote System Explorer) or you can expand New Connection to
make a connection to a remote server, where you enter a connection name and
the IP address or host name of the server.
- Navigate to the folder on the remote server that contains the files
you want to import. Use the left and right panes to select resources. Choose
individual resources from the right pane, or entire folders from the left
pane. (You can also select files from multiple folders).
- The Into folder contains the name of the
project you selected in the workbench. You can also navigate to a local folder
by clicking Browse.
- (Optional) Select the check box to overwrite (without prompting)
files of the same name in the workspace.
- Select one of the radio buttons to either replicate the remote
folder structure in the workspace or create only the actual folders you have
selected.
- You can also save the settings of the import action as a description
file in the workspace, for later reuse, so that you do not need to complete
the wizard every time you want to import resources. If applicable, check the Save
the settings of this import in the workspace and specify a directory
for the description file in the Description file field.
- Click Finish to import the resources to
your local project in the Navigator view.
