Creating a software analysis configuration

Create a software analysis configuration to define coding rules and the files to which the rules apply.

Before you begin

Before you can create an analysis configuration, you must complete these steps:
  1. Open one of the following perspectives: Enterprise Development, or AIX COBOL.
  2. Create a project and add COBOL source code files to it.

Procedure

These instructions assume that you are creating a software analysis configuration for a local project. You can select other scope options in the software analysis configuration editor and you can override the configured scope at run time.

  1. Open the software analysis configuration editor. For information about various methods of opening the editor, see Opening the software analysis configuration editor.
  2. In the left pane of the editor, you can create a software analysis configuration from scratch, or create one that is based on an existing configuration.
    • To create a software analysis configuration, do one of the following steps:
      • Click New launch configuration on the toolbar.
      • Right-click any node in the Software Analyzer tree and then click New.
      • Double-click the Software Analyzer node at the top of the tree.
    • To create a configuration that is based on an existing one, do one of the following steps:
      • Select the existing configuration in the Software Analyzer tree and then click Duplicate on the toolbar.
      • Right-click the existing configuration in the Software Analyzer tree and then click Duplicate.
    Tip:
    • If the button or the menu item is disabled, then enable it by selecting any node in the Software Analyzer tree.
    • If the Software Analyzer tree is not visible, show it by clearing the filter input field.
  3. In the Name field, enter a name for the new software analysis configuration.
  4. On the Scope tab, select Analyze selected projects and select the project that you want to review. For more information about setting the scope for an analysis, see Scope and rules for a software analysis configuration.
  5. On the Rules tab, select the rules that you want to use in the code review.
Tip: Hover over a rule to display a description of it. You can also get information about a rule by selecting the rule and pressing F1. For more information about selecting rules for an analysis, see Scope and rules for a software analysis configuration. For more information about identifying rules that belong to a rule set, see Identifying rules that belong to a rule set.
    1. In the Analysis Domains and Rules tree, expand the COBOL Code Review domain.
    2. Expand a rule category, such as Program Structures.
    3. Select a rule, such as Avoid ACCEPT statements.
    4. On the Properties tab:
      1. Set the severity for the rule. For more information about severity levels, see Severity levels.
      2. Set the value of any custom parameter.
  6. To save or undo your selections, do one of the following steps:
    • To save your analysis configuration, click Apply.
    • To undo the changes since the most recent Apply, click Revert.
  7. To close the software analysis configuration editor, do one of the following steps:
    • To close the editor and run the software analysis configuration, click Analyze. For more information about running a code review, see Running a code review.
    • To close the editor, click Close.
