Editing, running, and tuning EXEC SQL statements

From the System z® LPEX Editor, COBOL Editor, and PL/I Editor, you can populate the SQL Outline view with EXEC SQL statements in COBOL and PL/I source files. You can use the SQL Outline view to edit, run, and tune EXEC SQL statements.

Before you begin

  1. Install the Data Tools component of Rational® Developer for z Systems™.
  2. Rational Developer for z Systems and the Data Studio and InfoSphere® Optim™ version 4.1 products must be installed into the same client installation package group.
  3. Add data access development support to your local z/OS® project or remote MVS™ subproject:
    1. In the z/OS Projects view, select a local z/OS project or remote MVS subproject.
    2. From the menu, select Add Data Access Development Support. The Add Data Access Development Support wizard opens.
    3. Select a database connection or create a connection.

For more information about adding data access development support to a project, see Adding support for developing and testing SQL statements.

To turn off data access development support, select the project or subproject, right-click, and select Remove Data Access Development Support.

About this task

Rational Developer for z Systems uses the Data Studio pureQuery® technology to add support to COBOL and PL/I programs for running, editing, and tuning EXEC SQL statements. After you add data access development support to a local or remote z/OS project, you can run and tune EXEC SQL statements in COBOL and PL/I programs that are open in the System z LPEX Editor, COBOL Editor, and PL/I Editor. You can also populate the SQL Outline view with EXEC SQL statements from these editors and run the SQL tuning commands from the SQL Outline view.
