Populating the Object Table view and working with items

About this task

Before you can take advantage of all the functions available in the Object Table view, you need to know how to populate the view. The Object Table view takes the selected object in the Remote Systems view as input, and displays the contents in the table. You can also use the Work with actions from the Object Table view toolbar itself to populate the view. To work from the Remote Systems view to populate the Object Table view:

Procedure

  1. Expand your tree in the Remote Systems view until you see the library that contains the files, or file that contains the members you want to see in the Object Table view.
  2. Right-click the object and select Show in Table.
    • For libraries, this step displays the objects inside the library, their types, attributes, text description, and status. If you also want to see the last modified dates, creation dates, and sizes, click the Table view drop-down arrow and select Show columns > All.
    • For display files, this step displays file names, records, types, lengths, and text description.
    • For source physical files, this step displays the members inside, their names, types, attributes, text descriptions, and status.
    • For data physical files, this step displays members and fields in a cascading format. For members, their names, types, attributes, text descriptions, and status display. For fields, their names, records, types, lengths, and text descriptions display.

Results

To specify input within the Object Table view itself, using the Work with actions, click the drop-down menu from the view, select Work with > Libraries, Work with > Objects, or Work with > Members, and add specifications to define what the Object Table view displays. The Work with dialog boxes are the same as the ones you use in the Remote Systems view. See the related links for more information on these dialog boxes.
Tips:
  • Click any of the column titles to sort by that attribute, for example, click Size to sort the items by size, which sorts them from smallest to largest. Click the same attribute again to reverse the order that the items are sorted, for example, click Size again to sort from largest to smallest.
  • You can navigate through items in the view by double-clicking files or libraries. This action repopulates the view with the content of the file or library, similar to how you navigate through files in Windows Explorer. When you get down to editable items, such as a member, double-click the item to open it in the default editor for that type of item.
  • To print the list of items in the view, click the drop-down menu from the view and select Print.
  • To view or change the preferences for the Object Table view, click the drop-down menu from the view and select Preferences.
  • The view supports Windows keyboard shortcuts. For example, press Ctrl-A to select all of the items.
