Running programs and commands from the Object Table view

About this task

Running programs:

To run programs from the Object Table view, right click the item and select Run As or Run (Prompt) and then select i Application in RSE Job, Batch, Interactive, or Multi-threaded. See Running programs and commands for a description of the different ways to run a program.

Click Show Log to view details of the action after you run a command.
Restriction: You can only run program objects, for example, objects ending in *.pgm*.

Running commands:

You can run commands in the Command field beneath the Object Table view, and view messages in the Messages field. Here is what the Command area looks like:

To run commands:
  • After you populate the table, you can enter a command and select either Prompt to specify parameters and then run the command, or just select Run to run the command as normal. (See Running programs and commands again for a description of how to use the Run launch configurations.)
  • When you run a command, the Messages drop-down field is populated with the messages from the command.
  • When you select a message, the Details button is enabled. When you press this button, the message and its help is displayed.
  • Click Show Log to display the Commands Log view with the details of all commands run on the current connection.
  • You can also right-click the IBM® i Commands subsystem, select Show in Table, and then use Run from the pop-up menu for commands in the Object Table view.

Running commands with additional parameters:

In PDM, you can enter commands on the command line to correspond with actions specified in your options list. You can perform the same action from the Object Table view by entering a parameter in the command field beneath the view. More specifically, you can enter additional parameters to the command before the command is performed. Then, use the pop-up menu on items in the Object Table view to run commands, and the parameter will be appended to the command when it is run.

Expanding and collapsing the Command section:

If you want to reduce the amount of space the command section occupies in the Remote System Explorer, or if you do not need to run commands on items in the Object Table view, you can collapse the command section by clicking the arrow in the top left corner of the section.

Note that you can use either the Object Table view or the Remote Systems view to run commands and programs. In the Object Table view, you can see the properties of all items at the same time; they are displayed as rows across the table. In the Remote Systems view, you have greater ease of navigation; you can work from your Library list in Objects subsystem, and you can see the contents of many items before selecting the one you want to run.
