Specifying an auxiliary storage pool (ASP) group name for an IBM i connection

An IBM® i connection can be configured to use a specified auxiliary storage pool (ASP) group name for server jobs started by the connection. The libraries in the independent ASPs in the specified ASP group plus the libraries in the system ASP (ASP number 1) and basic user ASPs (ASP numbers 2 - 32) form the library name space for the connection.

About this task

The Remote System Explorer (RSE) uses the DDM host server to read and write to remote members and the command server to issue commands to the host and when debugging applications. When you connect to an IBM i system with an ASP group name set, both the DDM and command servers are started with this setting as the initial ASP group name. This makes the appropriate set of libraries available to the RSE. For information on the Definition and management of ASPs, see the Information Center for your release at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/eserver/ibmi.html.
Note: Setting the ASP group name for Rational® Developer for Power Systems Software client connections should only be done when the job starts. The SETASPGRP command can be issued from the RSE Commands view and it will take effect, however it is not recommended as it places the command server out of sync with the DDM server used to transfer members. There is no way to simultaneously alter the environment of the DDM server job. Once the prestarted job for the DDM server adapts to a particular user its ASP group cannot be changed.
An ASP group name can be specified for an IBM i connection using one of the follow methods:

Procedure

  1. The ASP group name can be based on the value specified in the job description that is associated with the user profile used for the connection. The ASP group name is set using the Initial ASP group (INLASPGRP) parameter of the job description.
    1. It can be set using the CHGJOBD command as follows:
       CHGJOBD JOBD(MYLIB/MYJOBD) INLASPGRP(IASP33)
Note: The main disadvantage of using job descriptions on your user profile is that all jobs that use that user profile are affected. If you work in multiple environments then it may be inconvenient to change your job description each time you need to change the initial ASP group. In that case, you will want to set the ASP group name on the connection as described in the next step.
  2. You can override the setting on the job description by specifying the ASP group name on the connection itself as follows:
    1. To configure a new IBM i connection, follow the steps in Configuring a connection to a remote server, however, before selecting Finish, go to the second page of the New Connection wizard and select Set auxiliary storage pool group and enter a value in the Name of auxiliary storage pool group: input field. If you have previously entered ASP group names, press the up arrow beside the input field to open the Work With History dialog to remove or reorder entries.
    2. For a previously defined connection, select the connection, right click and select Properties. Under the Connection subset of properties, select Set auxiliary storage pool group and enter a value in the Name of auxiliary storage pool group: input field. If you have previously entered ASP group names, press the up arrow beside the input field to open the Work With History dialog to remove or reorder entries.
Note: If the ASP group is not available when the connection is made, then the connection will proceed without the ASP group, and you will receive a message indicating that there was a problem. The ASP group might not be available because it is not defined or is varied off.
Note: If you change the ASP group of an active connection the change does not take effect until you disconnect and reconnect.
