ILE COBOL Language Reference
The Working-Storage Section describes data records that are not part of
external data files but are developed and processed internally by the
program. Type-names may be defined in the WORKING-STORAGE
SECTION.
- record-description-entry
- See File Section for a description. Data entries in the
Working-Storage Section that bear a definite hierarchic relationship to one
another must be grouped into records structured by level number.
- data-item-description-entry
- Independent items in the Working-Storage Section that bear no hierarchic
relationship to one another need not be grouped into records, provided that
they do not need to be further subdivided. Each is defined in a
separate data-item description entry that begins with either the level number
77 or 01. For the format and the clauses required in a data-item
description entry, see Data Division--Data Description Entry.
The initial value of any data item in the Working-Storage Section, except
an index data item, is specified by associating a VALUE clause with the
item. The initial value of any index data item, or of any data item not
associated with a VALUE clause, is undefined.
- Note:
- A maximum of 16 711 568 bytes is permitted for group items (including
tables).
