Accessing your integrated file system files

About this task

To access your IBM® i integrated file system (IFS) files, you make a connection as you normally would to your IBM i server, and from there, you can access the IFS. If you have never created a connection to an IBM i server, see the related link, and then complete the following steps. If you already have a connection to an IBM i server, then just complete the following steps:

Procedure

  1. In the Remote Systems view, expand your connection so that you can see IFS Files.
  2. Expand IFS Files and expand one of the items beneath. (Enter your user ID and password if prompted.)
    • File systems points you to the file systems available on the IBM i server, for example, QSYS.
    • Home points you to the /home directory under the Root file systems directory. You can also access this by expanding Root > Home.
    • Root file system points you to the IFS root, including file systems and other folders.
  3. When you find the files you want to work with, you can double-click them to open them in an editor, or right-click to see a list of options available. Explore the workbench menu as well to see more options for your remote files and folders.

Results

Restriction: If you want to use the Save As option for an IFS file, it is recommended that you do so using the Remote System LPEX editor. This way, the new file is created and saved on the IBM i server. If you want to perform the same function with an editor other than the Remote Systems LPEX editor, the Save As option will not save the file on the IBM i server. As a workaround, you need to create a new file, or use copy and paste, and then save the file, otherwise your changes could be lost when you close the workbench.
