Converting IBM i job logs from the Remote System Explorer

While running a job, you can use the Log and Trace Analyzer to import a log file from an IBM® i job log into the Profiling and Logging perspective. This topic describes starting Log and Trace Analyzer from the Remote System Explorer.

About this task

Procedure

  1. In the Remote System Explorer, in the Remote Systems view, expand Jobs.
  2. Right-click an active job and select Convert job log > Common Base Event (Prompt). The Convert job log wizard opens.
  3. Click the Log tab. The Connection field and Job group are pre-filled with the information from the selected job in the Remote System Explorer. In the Log file group, initial values are set by your preferences. See Setting preferences for IBM i Log and Trace Analyzer.
  4. Work with either a remote or a local copy of the log:
  5. Optional: Click the Destination tab. Type the destination project and the name for the monitor. You can set up a monitor as a way of grouping the logs. Specify whether the destination is an existing log file. If you want to replace an existing file or append to one:
    1. Select the Merge the log file with an existing log file in the workspace check box.
    2. Select the log file to be replaced or appended. Click Next.
    3. Choose whether to replace or append. Click OK.
  6. Click Finish. The conversion process starts. When the conversion finishes, the Profiling and Logging perspective opens, and the generated Common Base Events display in the Log view.

What to do next

Instead of using the prompt method, you can use the no-prompt method if you want to accept the default settings. Select Convert job log > Common Base Event and the conversion process starts. When the conversion finishes, the generated Common Base Events display in the Log view.
