Several editors are available for you to use. You can select
an editor according to the source type and editor features.
- The System z® LPEX Editor
is the default editor for Assembler files.
- The COBOL Editor is the default editor for COBOL files.
- The PL/I Editor is the default editor for PL/I files.
- The JCL Editor is the default editor for JCL files.
- The Remote C/C++ Editor is the default editor for C and C++ files.
- The Remote Makefile Editor is the default for makefiles.
To open a file with either the default editor or an assigned editor,
double-click the file. To choose an alternative editor from the list
of appropriate editors for the file type, right-click the file and
select Open With.
After you open a file with an editor, subsequent edit sessions
with the file use the same editor until you change editors. You can
also change the default editor that is associated with any particular
file extension.
The following table lists the available editors and the source
type that is supported by each.

For COBOL, JCL, and PL/I source files, verify that the editor you
choose supports the features that you want to use while editing.
Use the System z LPEX
Editor, COBOL Editor, JCL Editor, PL/I Editor, or Remote C/C++ Editor
with source files written in Assembler, COBOL, PL/I, C, or C++ and
with JCL files. These editors are designed to offer the fullest function
with these file types. If you choose to use another editor, you might
find that the following functions are not supported:
- Round-trip error detection
- Browse and view modes
- Record truncation warnings
- DBCS pseudo SO/SI support
- Bidirectional support
All of these functions are available in the System z LPEX Editor. All of these functions
except DBCS pseudo SO/SI support and bidirectional support are available
in the COBOL Editor, JCL Editor, and PL/I Editor.
Attention: Using
a different editor might result in lost or corrupted data if you attempt
an operation that is not supported.
