Creating a Remote Connection

How to create a connection to a remote system.

About this task

The Remote Systems view is, by default, part of the Local/Remote C/C++ perspective. To open this perspective from the workbench menu, click Window -> Open Perspective -> Other and then select Local/Remote C/C++. Alternatively, to open the Remote Systems view regardless of which perspective is active, from the workbench menu click Window -> Show View- > Remote Systems.

Procedure

  1. In the Remote Systems view, click the New Connection icon New Connection icon. Select the type of the machine you wish to connect to, and press Next
  2. Specify the host name, and optionally enter a description, then press Next.
  3. On the Connection Configuration page, you must select the method for connecting to the remote system. The simplest methods are via a daemon like the RSE daemon or REXEC.
    • Connecting via a Remote (RSE) daemon: Enter a port number representing the daemon port for the connection. By default this is 8050. Then click Finish. If there is no daemon available and you do not have authority to start a daemon, use REXEC as an alternative.
    • Connecting via REXEC: Select the radio button for REXEC to enable widgets to describe how to launch the server.
      • Specify the fully qualified path to the server installation directory and the launch command (usually ./server.sh).
      • Click Finish and the new connection will be shown in the Remote Systems view
    • Connecting to a running server: Select the associated radio button and click Finish. The new connection will appear in the Remote Systems view
      • Under the new connection in the Remote Systems view, right-click Files and select Properties.
      • On the Properties for Files page, select Subsystem and enter a port number. You will use this port to launch the server. Press OK to finish.
      • Start the server manually
      • telnet to the remote host and cd to the server install directory
      • type server.sh <port> to launch the server where <port> is the same port that you specified in the subsystem properties page.
