Accessing a remote system by using the Host Connection Emulator

You can use the Host Connection Emulator to connect to a remote system and open a full-screen emulator.

About this task

By using Host Connection Emulator, you can connect to the remote system and open a full-screen emulator. Optionally, you can run a macro either before or after you connect to the remote system. A macro runs a captured sequence of key strokes and screen progressions, such as a logon process.

Accessing the remote system

Procedure

To access a remote system:

  1. Right-click the remote system name in the Remote Systems view or in the Remote System Details view.
  2. Click Host Connection Emulator.

Results

The Host Connection Emulator starts. The connection is automatically established by using either the configuration defaults or the settings that were last used to connect to the system. The profile that is associated with the remote system that you selected runs and opens an emulator screen that is defined in the profile.
Tip: You do not have to be connected to the Remote System Explorer (RSE) to connect to the remote system by using the Host Connection Emulator. All that you require is the RSE remote server properties (host name or IP address).

Setting the code page

You can set the code page for the Host Connection Emulator or accept the default setting.

Before you begin

You must be connected to a remote system.

About this task

By default, the code page is IBM-037 United States. Subsequent launches of Host Connection Emulator use the code page that was stored previously in the host properties file.

Procedure

To set the code page for the Host Connection Emulator:

  1. Start the Host Connection Editor.
  2. Click the Host Properties tab of the Host Connection Editor.
  3. Specify the code page by selecting a code page from the Code page list in the Host Connection Properties group.

Configuring remote system properties

You can configure remote system properties for a host connection.

Procedure

To set or change the configuration options, complete one of these procedures:

Creating a macro

You can create a macro to automatically log on to a remote system. Macros are captured key strokes and screen progressions that complete repeatable tasks.

Procedure

  1. Open the Host Properties page for the remote system to work with.
  2. Scroll to the Macro information area of the Host Properties page, and click Create New.
  3. In the file name field, type a name for the macro and click Save. A typical naming convention is a file name with the .macro extension, such as some_name.macro.
  4. Click Record.
  5. From the Host Connection window, capture a sequence of key strokes.
  6. To stop recording and save the macro, click Stop and Save.

What to do next

To play a macro, import an existing macro from the file system and select Play. This action plays the sequence that was recorded in the macro from the screen that was last open in the Host Connection Emulator window.
Note: If a macro must run from a particular screen, go to the required screen before starting the macro.

Copying, cutting, and pasting in the Host Connection Emulator window

You can copy, cut, and paste text that is displayed in the Host Connection Emulator window.

Procedure

  1. To copy or cut text from the window, left-click and drag the mouse to select the text to copy or cut; the default text is all the text in the window. Then, do one of these actions:
