Creating an AIX connection

The first step in using the Remote System Explorer and your AIX® COBOL projects is to create a connection to your AIX server.

Before you begin

The AIX server must be set up and running the daemon on port 8050.

About this task

To connect to an AIX server:

Procedure

  1. In the Remote Systems view, click on the Define a connection to remote system button. The New Connection wizard will start.
  2. Select AIX and click Next
  3. Enter the TCP/IP Host name and a Connection name for this connection. The Connection name can be any name you want to associate with this connection and will appear in the Remote Systems view.
  4. Click Finish.

Results

When you expand your connection you will see entries under the connection that allow you to access different AIX resources. These entries are called subsystems in the RSE. The Files subsystem allows you to access and work with files on your remote filesystem. The Processes subsystem allows you to access and work with processes running on your remote system. The Shells subsystem allows you to work with your open command shells.

By default, RSE will attempt to communicate with a daemon on your AIX machine listening to port 8050. If you receive messages that RSE is unable to connect to your host, then either the daemon has not been installed, is not running, or is listening on a different port. Contact your AIX system administrator to find out if the daemon is listening on another port. If so, you can change the port you are listening on by expanding your connection name in the Remote Systems view and right-clicking on Files item and selecting Properties. Click on Server Launcher Settings and chage the port under Remote daemon to the one that your administrator has set up.

You can now connect to your AIX server. See Connecting to an AIX server.
