COBOL for Windows, Version 7.5, Programming Guide

File names and extensions supported by cob2

Files with certain extensions are processed by the compiler. The file extension .CBL is most commonly used for COBOL source.

All other files are passed to the linker. Those with recognized file extensions are processed as follows:

.DEF
The name of the module definition file.
.DLL
The name of the generated dynamic link library (DLL). The default DLL is the first source file listed in the cob2 command that has extension .DLL.
.EXP
The name of the export file.
.EXE
The name of the generated executable file. If not specified, the name defaults to the name of the first COBOL source file listed in the cob2 command that has extension .EXE.
.IMP
The name of the import library associated with a DLL that contains symbols (usually names of external routines) referenced by your programs. This file is used by the linker to resolve those references.
.LIB
The name of the import or standard library, which contains symbols (usually names of external routines) referenced by your programs. This file is used by the linker to resolve those references.
.MAP
The name of the map file. If /MAP is not specified, no map file is generated.
.OBJ
The name of the object file to be passed to the linker.
