Using Rational ClearCase in a non-global zone

Effective use of Rational® ClearCase® in a non-global zone imposes special requirements on MVFS performance tuning as well as VOB and view storage creation.

The MVFS includes several special adaptations that enable performance tuning in non-global zones. For more information on this topic, see MVFS caches in Solaris zones. In addition, using Rational ClearCase in a non-global zone also imposes several requirements on administrators who create VOB and view storage.

VOB and view storage

Because the NFS server is not supported in non-global zones, VOB and view storage in a non-global zone is visible only within that zone. Any VOB or view storage that is to be accessible across zones on a given computer can be implemented in one of these locations:
  • The global zone of the computer that will be accessing the VOBs and views
  • A network-attached storage (NAS) device
  • A remote computer that will act as the VOB or view server. (If that computer is configured with non-global zones, the VOB or view storage must be located in the global zone or on a NAS device.)

If you create a local VOB or view within a non-global zone that has a non-local registry server specified, the view or VOB might appear to be accessible from other clients of that registry server. However, because of the Sun NFS server restriction on non-global zones, the VOB or view storage is not accessible, so you cannot actually work with that view or VOB. (For example, you would not be able to remove that view by running a cleartool rmview command from another host that is also registered on that server.)
