About starting views and activating VOBs

To access files from a dynamic view, you must start the view and activate the VOBs that contain your source files. On Linux® or UNIX® workstations, you can also set the view.

Starting (or setting) the view runs a view_server process, which arranges data in the VOBs that are activated on your computer into a directory tree. VOBs that you activate are displayed as subdirectories of a view. Then you browse the activated VOB as you would any other directory.

If you are unable to start a dynamic view that is on another host, confirm with your administrator that you can access the view storage directory. For more information, see the IBM Rational ClearCase Administrator's Guide.

In a UCM project, all VOBs that contain components for any of the projects that you have joined are activated when you access a view attached to a stream in the project. In base ClearCase®, you must activate the VOBs that you want to access.

On Windows® computers, clicking a view shortcut icon in Rational® ClearCase Explorer activates (starts) the view. If you assign a view to a drive letter, the view is started when you log on to your computer, but you do not have to assign a view to a drive letter. If you have a view shortcut in Rational ClearCase Explorer, the associated view starts when you click the shortcut. You can start a dynamic view that was created from a Rational ClearCase host running Linux or the UNIX system.
