A VOB (versioned object base) is a permanent data repository that stores information that you have placed under Rational® ClearCase® control. The history of all the changes is stored in a VOB.
A view is a workspace in which you make changes to your files. In Windows Explorer, a view looks like any other directory.
When you work in a snapshot view, you load copies of your source files from a VOB to the view on your hard drive. Other users working in their own snapshot views can change the same files without interfering with your work.
When you check out a file from a snapshot view, you can modify the version in your view of a file. Update your snapshot view before you check out the file to ensure that you are working with the most current version. If you attempt to check out a file that is not the latest version, Rational ClearCase displays a warning.
When you check in a file, the version is updated in the VOB.
