Exercise 3: Creating a new mapping model

This exercise teaches you how to create a mapping model that includes the sources and targets from the models that you just accessed from the Database Explorer.


Before you begin this exercise, you must complete Exercise 2: Accessing data models.

To create a new mapping model:

After you have data models in the Data Project Explorer view, follow these steps to create a mapping model by using the schemas that are now available in the data design project.
  1. In the Data Project Explorer view, expand the current project, mytestproject.
  2. Right-click the Mappings folder and select New -> Mapping Model to open the Mapping Editor wizard.
  3. In the Enter or select the parent folder field, the project name mytestproject is displayed because it is the current project.
  4. In the File name field, specify myfirstmapping.msl as the mapping model name. The model name must be unique within the project.
  5. Click Next.
  6. On the Specify the Mapping Source page of the Mapping Editor wizard, click Add to open the file browser. The .dbm files in the current project that have not already been selected are displayed. In this example, there are two source .dbm files that are displayed.
  7. Select Sample.dbm, and then click OK.
  8. Click Next.
  9. On the Specify the Mapping Source page of the Mapping Editor wizard, the schemas that are in the .dbm file appear in a tree view. Select the SAMP schema. The schemas that you select will be part of the mapping model.
  10. Click Next.
  11. Click Browse on the Specify the Mapping Target page of the Mapping Editor wizard. The file browser displays the valid .dbm files. .
  12. Select Sample2.dbm and then click OK.
  13. On the Specify the Mapping Target page of the Mapping Editor wizard, a schema tree opens with all schemas selected. In this example, only one schema is in the Sample2.dbm file (SAMP), and it is already selected.
  14. Click Next.
  15. On the New Mapping File Summary page of the Mapping Editor wizard, view your selections in the summary window.

  16. Click Finish. The mapping model that you created appears as an MSL file in the Mappings folder.
  17. Close the mapping model that you just created by clicking File->Close from the workbench menu bar.
You now have a mapping model that contains source and target elements.
