Main Description

Describes services and their interconnections providing for or supporting DoD functions. Services in DoDAF 2.0 are not net-centric services.

A Service is a mechanism to enable access to a set of one or more capabilities , where the access is provided using a prescribed interface and is exercised consistent with constraints and policies as specified by the service description.

  • Services are defined by their interface
  • Implemented as a ServiceInterface in UPDM (using SOAML)
  • Services end up being realised by Systems

The mapping between the (Operational) Activities, Capabilities and (Service) Activities allows architects and stakeholders to compare specifications using trade study analysis techniques. The service view set is identical to the system view set. Services in DoDAF 2.0 are akin to the true definition of a service not the DoDAF 1.5 definition of a service. When everything is a service (instead of a System) you will probably use more service views.
