Welcome to the Rational Defense Solution for DoDAF Website!

This configuration includes the practices, delivery process for the DoDAF standard.

It currently supports workflows for the development of Solution Architectures based upon a systems engineering workflow

The intent is that the workflow is tool neutral the workflow can be implemented using Rational System Architect and Rational Rhaposdy for the development of DoDAF 2.0 architectures. Employing either DoDAF 2.0 or UPDM 2.0 in its DODAF 2.0 variation.

The US Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) version 2.0 is a major update to the previous DoDAF (version 1.5) specification. It presents an entirely new metamodel, called the DoDAF metamodel 2 (DM2), and with it a new data-centric approach to building architectures.

Introduction to DoDAF 2.0


Although DoDAF 2.0 takes a data centric approach to how it captures architectures and the elements and relationships that represent them it still uses viewpoints and views to capture and represent aspects of the architecture information.

DoDAF 2.0 consists of 8 Viewpoints (groups of views) to capture various aspects of the architecture. The viewpoints contain 52 views (variously described as models, products, reports or diagrams) on which information is either created or displayed depending on whether you are a reviewer or an architect.

It is not neccassary for an architecture to use all the views or even at the same level of detail. This is entirely dependent upon the intended use of the architecture. In this instance two distinct workflows have been identified, a planning/strategic workflow for enterprise architecture and a systems specification workflow for solution architeture.

The content of this practice was developed from understanding the views, the elements that appear on the views and the relationships that exist between the elements. This has led to a tool independent model based workflow based on systems engineering best practices for the development of solution architecture.
