Asset classifications identify and characterize similar assets. Other than, assets, you can classify several objects, such as locations, items, sales orders, and work orders.
You can add a classification to an asset on the Specification tab of the Assets (SP) application. Classifications are also added to an asset when you specify that an asset is a rotating item, and the item is associated with a classification.
There are two types of classifications, global classifications, and customer-specific classifications. Global classifications can be added to any asset, including assets with no customer associations. Customer-specific classifications are relevant only to certain customers. An asset can use customer-specific classifications only if the primary customer of the asset (or parent of the primary customer) is associated with the classification.
Attributes define the characteristics of a classification. When you classify an asset, attributes of the classification are copied to the Specification tab as determined by the primary customer of the asset.
There are two types of attributes, global attributes and customer-specific attributes. All assets can use global attributes, including assets with no customer associations. Customer-specific attributes are relevant only to certain customers and are copied to the Specification tab when the primary customer of the asset (or parent of the primary customer) is associated with the attribute.
You create an asset and associate Customer 2 as the primary customer of the asset. You specify Notebook100 as the item number, and define the asset as a rotating asset.
The global classification that is associated with Notebook100 is copied to the Classification field on the Specification tab. The global classification has global attributes, and has customer-specific attributes associated with Customer 2 and Customer 1 (the parent of Customer 2). All of these attributes are copied to the Specification tab.
You create an asset with no customer associations. You specify Notebook100 as the item number, and define the asset as a rotating asset.
The global classification that is associated with Notebook100 is copied to the Classification field. The global classification has global attributes, and has customer-specific attributes associated with Customer 2 and Customer 1 (the parent of Customer 2).
Because the asset has no associated customers, only the global attributes are copied to the Specification tab. Later, you associate Customer 2 with the asset. Attributes that are associated with Customer 2 and Customer 1 (the parent), become available. You click Select Attributes on the Specification tab to select and copy the attributes to the Specification tab.
Later, you remove Customer 2 from the asset. Some customer-specific attributes on the Specification tab are not relevant to the asset. All attributes that are not relevant to the primary customer when compared with the customers that are associated with the classification or its attributes have NO in the Customer Match field on the Specification tab.
