Linear Assets SetupUsing linear assets functionality involves some prerequisite setup procedures, such as defining units of measure, creating linear referencing methods, and so forth. This topic outlines the procedures. It does not provide detailed steps. For specific instructions, use the help or other documentation specific to the procedure.
Most of the procedures involve setting up values that you need when you work with linear assets. Depending on your enterprise, you might already have created some of the values for other purposes.
You need to have the appropriate units of measure available when you create linear referencing methods (LRMs).
You set up the units of measure in the Assets (SP) application: from the Select Action menu, select Unit of Measure > Add/Modify Units of Measure. Add rows to the Add/Modify Units of Measure dialog box to include the units you need, for example, miles, feet, kilometers, and meters.
When you create an LRM, you specify the unit of measure the UI uses for the measure (length) of the linear asset. You can also store the measure values in a different unit of measure. For example, you use miles for the distance measure in the UI, but you also want to store the values in kilometers. To store both values, you set up miles as the unit of measure, kilometers as the base unit of measure, and a conversion from miles to kilometers.
You set up conversions in the Assets (SP) application: from the Select Action menu, select Unit of Measure > Add/Modify Conversion. Add rows to the Add/Modify Conversions dialog box to include the conversions you need. For example, you might need a conversion from miles to kilometers, or feet to meters.
When you use Y and Z offsets, you measure from specified points. With the Y offset, for example, you might measure from the midline of a road or from the right pavement edge. The values "midline" and "right pavement edge" are domain values that you create to be used as Select Value lists.
You create domains in the Domains application.
When you create a linear asset, you specify the LRM to use with it.
You set up LRMs in the Assets (SP) application: from the Select Action menu, select Add/Modify Linear Referencing Methods. Create one or more LRMs to use with your linear assets.
You generally use features in working with linear assets. You create the features in the Features application.
You can create classifications of features and of linear assets to facilitate organizing them and retrieving attributes. You create classifications in the Classifications application.
You can create relationships between multiple linear assets, between linear and fixed assets, and between linear assets and locations. Relationships are descriptive rather than hierarchical. For example, one road can "intersect" another road. If you specify that the relationship is a reference point, you can associate it with the linear asset and it automatically becomes a feature that users can use to locate work. You create relationships in the Relationships application and apply them on the Relationships tab in the Assets (SP) application.
If you use special meters with your linear assets, you need to create the meter records before you can associate them with the linear asset. For example, a traffic counter might be a meter you want to associate with linear assets. Use the Meters application to create the meter records.
