Configuration Item TabYou use the Configuration Item tab in the Configuration Items (SP) application to create, view, modify, and delete configuration items.
A configuration item might be associated with another record, such as an asset, location, item, service, or service group. When you create the CI, you can make the association with the other record.
For example, a computer system is an asset, because you purchased it through a procurement process and it has a financial value attached to it. It might also be associated with other information, such as warranties and service level agreements. The same computer system is also a CI because it is under change and configuration management. When you create the CI, you can associate it with its Assets record.
Some CIs can be physical locations, such as a data center. Discovery tools usually do not find these CIs. You can associate them with location records.
Some CIs have no association with other records.
You often create a configuration item based on an actual configuration item record created by a discovery tool. The configuration item record you create in this application is in effect an authorized version of the one in the Actual Configuration Items application.
You can associate multiple customers with a CI on this tab. When you associate customers with a CI, one of the customers is the primary customer. The primary customer is used to find agreements, service level agreements, and response plans when an agent creates a ticket or work order for a CI. The primary customer also determines classifications that the CI can use to further identify and characterize the CI, and determines the specifications within a classification that apply to the primary customer. You also associate customers with CIs so that access to CIs is restricted to users who are authorized to information related to that customer.
The Specifications table window displays the attributes associated with the configuration item. Attributes are global attributes and customer specific attributes that are associated with the primary customer or the parent of the primary customer. You can add and delete attributes from the specification.
Using the Select Action menu, you can view the following information about the CI:
actual CI details
work details
CI relationship history
attribute value history
actual CI change history
several topologies
You can manage CI collections, and you can also directly create the following kinds of records for the CI:
service requests
incidents
problems
work orders
changes
releases
