Location classifications identify and characterize similar locations. Other than locations, you can classify several objects, such as assets, items, sales orders, and work orders. However, when you classify a location, only classifications that are applicable to locations are displayed.
You can add a classification to a location on the Specification tab of the Locations (SP) application. Classifications are also added to a location if you specify that the location is a rotating item, and the item is associated with a classification.
There are two types of classifications, global classifications, and customer-specific classifications. Global classifications can be added to any location, including locations with no customer associations. Customer-specific classifications are relevant only to certain customers. A location can use customer specific classifications only if the primary customer of the location (or a parent of the primary customer) is associated with the classification.
Attributes define the characteristics of a classification. When you classify a location, attributes of the classification are copied to the Specification tab as determined by the primary customer of the location.
There are two types of attributes, global attributes and customer-specific attributes. All locations can use global attributes, including locations with no customer associations. Customer-specific attributes are relevant only to certain customers and are copied to the Specification tab when the primary customer of the location (or parent of the primary customer) is associated with the attribute.
You create a location and associate customer 2 as the primary customer of the location. You specify Pump100 as the item number, identifying the location as a rotating location.
The global classification associated with Pump100 is copied to the Classification field on the Specification tab. The global classification has global attributes, and customer-specific attributes associated with customer 2 and customer 1 (the parent of customer 2). All of these attributes are copied to the Specification tab.
You create a location with no customer associations. You specify Pump100 as the item number, identifying the location as a rotating location.
The global classification associated with Pump100 is copied to the Classification field on the Specification tab. The global classification has global attributes and customer-specific attributes associated with customer 2 and customer 1 (the parent of customer 2).
Because the location has no associated customers, only the global attributes of Pump100 are copied to the Specification tab. Later, you associate customer 2 with the location. Attributes that are associated with customer 2 and customer 1 (the parent), become available. You click Select Attributes on the Specification tab to select and copy the attributes to the Specification tab.
Later still, you remove customer 2 from the location. You now have customer-specific attributes on the Specification tab that are no longer relevant to the location. All attributes that are not relevant to the primary customer display NO in the Customer Match field on the Specification tab.
