Technician port

The technician port is an Ethernet port that is used to initialize and apply service to the system.

To use the technician port, plug one end of an Ethernet cable into the technician port. Then, plug the other end into the Ethernet port of a personal computer with Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) configured and a web browser that is installed. Run the system configuration tool by going to address http://install with your browser. If you do not have DCHP, open a supported browser and go to the default static IP address 192.168.0.1 for the node.

Notes:
  • When your personal computer is configured with DHCP, the technician port uses DHCP to reconfigure network services on your personal computer. Software on your personal computer that was using these services might experience network problems while it is connected to the technician port. For example, selecting a link in a web page that was loaded before you connect to the technician port might result in an error message.
  • For SFP-based systems, the SFP module must be inserted before you power on the server. Otherwise, you might receive the Internal Service Error that is related to the techport service.
The location of the technician port can vary, depending on the number of available Ethernet ports on the system.
  • If the server has more than two Ethernet ports that are not in a PCIe expansion slot, the dedicated technician port becomes the first 1/10Gbps Ethernet port that is identified by the IBM Spectrum Virtualize™ software.
  • If the server has fewer than three Ethernet ports that are not in a PCIe expansion slot, there will not be a dedicated technician port. IBM Spectrum Virtualize recognizes any Ethernet port that is not in a PCIe expansion slot and is directly connected to a computer that is configured for DHCP as the technician port.

For example, on Lenovo System x3650 M5 nodes, IBM Spectrum Virtualize recognizes the first onboard 1 Gbps Ethernet port (Ethernet 1, as viewed from left to right) as the dedicated technician port.

Figure 1 shows the rear view of the node and the location of the port. For information about the ports, see Key ports and slots for a Lenovo x3650 M5 server.

On Supermicro SYS-2028U-TRTP+ systems, IBM Spectrum Virtualize recognizes Ethernet port 1 ( 14  in Figure 2) as the dedicated technician port. See Supermicro SYS-2028U-TRTP+ servers for more details about the ports.
