Servicing

The following topics provide information about how to service an IBM Spectrum Virtualize™ system.

With concurrent maintenance, the hardware on one IBM Spectrum Virtualize node can be serviced or replaced while the SAN and host systems are doing productive work. If one IBM Spectrum Virtualize system is being serviced, the other system can keep the SAN operational.

Attention:

Do not remove the power from both nodes in an I/O group unless you are instructed to do so.

Enabling concurrent maintenance
To enable concurrent maintenance, configure the system nodes in pairs. If one system node is being serviced, the other node can keep the network operational.
Replacing nodes nondisruptively
You can nondisruptively replace an existing node with a new IBM Spectrum Virtualize node.
Diagnosing and resolving problems with fix procedures
You can use fix procedures to diagnose and resolve problems with the system.
Completing the system maintenance procedure by using the CLI
You can use the command-line interface (CLI) to complete the system maintenance procedure.
Node errors
If an error occurs on a node, an event ID and an associated error code are generated.
Marking errors as fixed
You can use the management GUI to mark errors as fixed in the events page. This action is only necessary if you fix an error without using the online maintenance procedures. The online procedures automatically mark an error as fixed after a successful repair.
Recovering from offline volumes
You can use the management GUI or issue commands to recover from an offline volume after a node or an I/O group fails.
Recovering offline volumes using the CLI
If a node or an I/O group fails, you can use the command-line interface (CLI) to recover offline volumes.
Moving offline volumes to their original I/O group using the CLI
You can move offline volumes to their original I/O group by using the command-line interface (CLI).
Moving offline volumes to the recovery I/O group using the CLI
You can move offline volumes to the recovery I/O group by using the command-line interface (CLI). The system does not move the selected volume if it is being formatted. After the formatting process completes, you can move the volume.
Recovering a node and returning it to the system by using the CLI
After a node or an I/O group fails, you can use the command-line interface (CLI) to recover a node and return it to the system.
Removing a storage system by using the CLI
You can remove a storage system by using the command-line interface (CLI). The system supports both Fibre Channel and iSCSI-attached external storage systems.
