Planning network cable connections

The cable-connection tables provide an easy to read method of recording the locations of current and planned cable connections for each control enclosure in the system.

Use the following tables to plan the cable connections for each control enclosure in your system.

Ethernet connections

Each node canister in a control enclosure connects over an Ethernet cable from Ethernet port 1 of the canister to an enabled port on your Ethernet switch or router. Ethernet port 1 is for accessing the management GUI, the service assistant GUI for the node canister, and iSCSI host attachment.

Optionally, you can attach an Ethernet cable from Ethernet port 2 on the canister to your Ethernet network. Port 2 can be used for the management GUI and iSCSI host attachment.

Table 1 provides a list of Ethernet cable standards. Ethernet cables are not supplied as part of your order. Ensure the cables that are used meet the minimum standards for the Ethernet port type
Table 1. Ethernet cable standards

1 Gbps Ethernet port TP CAT 5 RJ45
10 Gbps or 25 Gbps Ethernet port (optional) Optical fiber OM2 (up to 60 meters) or OM3 (60 - 150 meters) LC
Record the Storwize® V7000 Gen2 node canister Ethernet port connections with Table 2. Each system has three 1 Gbps onboard Ethernet ports (a forth 1 Gbps port is exclusively used as the technician port). Ethernet ports 4 - 7 are made available by the use of one of the following optional adapters:
  • 4-port 10 Gbps Ethernet adapter in slot 2 or slot 3 (ports 4-7)
  • 2-port 25 Gbps RoCE adapter or 2-port 25 Gbps iWARP adapter in slot 2, slot 3, or both slots (ports 4-5)

Fibre Channel connections

Record the Storwize V7000 Gen2 node canister FC port connections with Table 3. FC connectivity is optional and requires a 4-port 16 Gbps FC host interface adapters. The system can support one or two FC host interface adapters.
