Setting the Fibre Channel port mapping: 2145-SV1

When you upgrade to a SAN Volume Controller 2145-SV1 node, you can preserve the port layout and worldwide port names (WWPNs) from the existing node. To do so, you can change which physical ports are mapped to particular Fibre Channel I/O ports on the 2145-SV1 node.

Determining adapter slot locations

In most cases, you can use one of the standard port mappings when you are replacing a SAN Volume Controller 2145-DH8, SAN Volume Controller 2145-CF8, or 2145-CG8 node.

Table 1 describes the standard port mapping on a 2145-SV1 node. To use the table, locate the row that fully describes the location and type of Fibre Channel (FC) and Ethernet adapters in your existing node. If you set the pre-defined port mapping in the -fcportmap column, you must install the appropriate adapters in the slot locations that are shown in the2145-SV1 columns. You can also install more adapters in the unused slots of the new node.

The following examples describe how to use the table to determine the appropriate slot locations and port mapping for a new 2145-SV1 node.
  • If your existing 2145-CG8 node has one 4-port FC adapter that is installed in slot one, you must install a 4-port FC adapter in slot 3 of the 2145-SV1 node.

To create the port mapping, specify the -fcportmap default parameter on the chvpd command.

  • If your 2145-DH8 node has a 2-port FC adapter that is installed in slot 1 and a 4-port Ethernet adapter in slot 2, you must install a 4-port FC adapter in slot 3 and a 4-port Ethernet adapter in slot 4 of the 2145-SV1 node.

To create the port mapping, specify the -fcportmap dh8:2+4 parameter on the chvpd command.

  • If your 2145-DH8 node has 4-port FC adapters that are installed in slots 1-3 and a 4-port Ethernet adapter in slot 5, you must install a 4-port FC adapter in slots 3, 4, and 6 and a 4-port Ethernet adapter in slot 7 of the 2145-SV1 node.

To create the port mapping, specify the -fcportmap default parameter on the chvpd command.

Note: If none of the values in Table 1 matches your configuration, you can use the following web-based tool to determine the exact mapping for your system.

Notes:
  • * Most upgrades from a 2145-DH8 node that has fewer than four ports in slot 1 have different mappings, depending on the WWNN; these mappings have an "801" or "80c" suffix.
  • ** This mapping does not have an "801" version. If you have this adapter configuration and a WWNN from a previous node type, contact your IBM® service support representative (SSR).

Determining the port mapping

The following sections describe how to determine the individual port mappings that are listed in Table 1. The name of each section represents the value that you should specify on the -fcportmap parameter of the chvpd command.

In each table, the new_adapter_location and new_adapter_port_id values are the adapter slot and port numbers in the 2145-SV1 node that will be assigned the port mask position (fc_io_port_id) and WWPN value. You can also set port mappings for adapters that are not yet installed in the 2145-SV1 node. These mappings take effect if an adapter is later installed in that slot location. Each table shows one of the standard mappings and the chvpd command that is required to set the port mapping.

Depending on the hardware model to which it was first assigned, the WWNN of your existing node falls within the ranges that are shown in Table 2. The method for assigning WWPNs is different for each range and is selected automatically based on the WWNN of the node. If the WWNN value of your node does not fall within one of these ranges, contact your IBM service support representative.
Table 2. Summary of WWNN ranges for SAN Volume Controller nodes
Node WWNN range

2145-DH8 or 2145-SV1 (in legacy mode) 500507680C000000 - 500507680C00FFFF
2145-SV1 (in standard mode) 500507680F000000 - 500507680F00FFFF
Important: You must set the port mapping in the new 2145-SV1 node before you add it to the existing system. When you issue the chvpd command to change the mapping, the 2145-SV1 node reboots to apply the new settings.

Port map default

Use the default port mapping if the existing node has the following characteristics:
  • A 2145-CG8 or 2145-CF8 node
  • A 2145-DH8 with only 4-port FC or Ethernet adapters that are installed, with the slots populated in ascending order:
    • Slot 1 only
    • Slots 1 and 2
    • Slots 1, 2, and 3
    • Slots 1, 2, 3, and 5
  • A 2145-DH8 node with slots that are populated in ascending order, where only the highest slot contains a 2-port FC adapter

To establish this port map on the 2145-SV1 node, enter one of the following chvpd commands.

satask chvpd -wwnn 500507680x0xxxxx -fcportmap default

or

Port map dh8:0+4

Use this mapping if the existing 2145-DH8 node has slot 1 empty and a 4-port Ethernet adapter that is installed in slot 2.

The existing four ports are mapped to the four ports in slot 3 of the 2145-SV1 node. If you install a 4-port adapter in slot 4 of the 2145-SV1 node, the ports take the WWPN values that would have been used by slot 1 of the 2145-DH8 node.

Port map dh8:2+2:801

Use this port mapping if the existing node has the following characteristics:
  • 2145-DH8 node with two 2-port FC adapters that are installed in slots 1 and 2.
  • The WWNN format is in legacy mode (50050768010xxxxx), as if it was originally assigned to a 2145-CG8 or 2145-CF8 node.

The existing four ports from the two FC adapters are mapped to the four ports in slot 3 of the 2145-SV1 node. If a 4-port adapter is installed in slot 4 of the 2145-SV1 node, it takes the unused WWPN values from slots 1 and 2 of the 2145-DH8 node.

To establish this port map on the 2145-SV1 node, enter one of the following chvpd commands.

satask chvpd -wwnn 500507680x0xxxxx -fcportmap dh8:4+4+2+2

or

satask chvpd -wwnn 500507680x0xxxxx -fcportmap 31-11,32-12,33-13,34-14,41-21,42-22,43-23,44-24,61-31,62-32,63-51,64-52,71-33,72-34,73-53,74-54

Setting the mapping manually

The fcportmap value is built from the slot and location of each port in the 2145-SV1 node and the slot and port locations from the existing node. To manually set the port mapping, perform the following steps.

  1. On the node that you are upgrading, issue the lsportfc command.

The system displays detailed information about the existing ports on the node. Table 19 shows example output from a node that has a 4-port Fibre Channel adapter in slot 1 and a 2-port Fibre Channel adapters in slots 2 and 5.

  2. Record the adapter_location, adapter_port_id, and WWPN values for each fc_io_port_id that is displayed in the lsportfc output.
In Table 20, the appropriate values from Table 19 are shown in columns C, D, and WWPN.

    7     5 1 500507680158BADF
    8     5 2 500507680168BADF
  3. Ensure the 2145-SV1 node is fitted with at least the same number of Fibre Channel and Ethernet ports as the existing node.

In this example, the 2145-SV1 node has two 4-port Fibre Channel adapters in slots 3 and 4.

  4. Record the slot numbers and port numbers that are used in the 2145-SV1 node.

In Table 21, the adapter_location and adapter_port_id values for the 2145-SV1 node are added to columns A and B.

    7 4 3 5 1 500507680158BADF
    8 4 4 5 2 500507680168BADF
  5. Enter the chvpd command to create the port mapping. Specify the slot and location of each port in the 2145-SV1 node, followed by the slot and location of each port in the existing node, in the form AB-CD,AB-CD.
satask chvpd -wwnn 500507680100BADF -fcportmap AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD

For example, the following command uses the information that was recorded in Table 21.

satask chvpd -wwnn 500507680100BADF -fcportmap 31-11,32-12,33-13,34-14,41-21,42-22,43-51,44-52
  6. Optionally, you can add mappings for more ports that might be installed on the 2145-SV1 node in the future.
