You might need to replace a PCI express adapter on a SAN Volume Controller 2145-SV1 node.This procedure is for a Tier 1 customer replaceable unit (CRU). Replacement
of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM® installs a Tier
1 CRU at your request, you are charged for the installation. Service agreements can be purchased so
that you can ask IBM to replace these units.
Before you begin
This service action applies to the
SAN Volume Controller 2145-SV1 PCI express adapters:
- 10 Gbps Ethernet adapter
- Compression accelerator adapter
- Fibre Channel adapter
- SAS adapter
About this task
This service action assumes that the node was turned off, removed from the rack, and the PCI
express adapter was removed. The adapter is replaced in the same slot from which the same type of
adapter was removed. For the list of the expansion adapters that are supported
by each PCIe slot, see Optional features.
Procedure
To replace an adapter, complete the following steps.
- Align the adapter with the PCI connector on the riser card and the guide on the external end of
the riser-card assembly, as shown in Figure 1.

- Ensure that the slots on the adapter are aligned correctly in to the PCI riser-card assembly,
as Figure 2 shows.

- Press the adapter firmly into the PCI connector on the riser card.
- Securely reattach the adapter to the adapter assembly, as shown in Figure 3.

- Press down on the assembly. Make sure that the riser-card assembly is fully seated in the
riser-card connector on the system board.
- Install the top back cover, as described in Replacing the top covers: 2145-SV1.
- Slide the node into the rack, as described in Replacing a node in a rack: 2145-SV1.
- Reconnect the external cables. Reconnect the power cords to turn on the node; then, turn on the
peripheral devices.
