You might need to replace a faulty attachment SAS cable on a SAN Volume Controller 2145-12F or 2145-24F expansion enclosure with
a new one received from FRU stock.
About this task
Be careful when you are replacing the hardware components that are located in
the back of the system. Do not inadvertently disturb or remove any cables that you are not
instructed to remove.
Attention: If you need to replace more than one cable, record which two ports, canisters, and enclosures
each cable connects, so you can match the connections with the replacement cables. The system cannot
operate if the expansion enclosure attachment SAS cabling is incorrect. See Installing for more information about SAS cabling for expansion
enclosures.
Procedure
To replace a SAS cable, complete the following steps.
- Locate the connector at one end of the SAS cable that is
to be removed.
- Grasp the connector by its blue tag. Pull the tag.
- Release the connector and slide it out of the port.
- Repeat step 2 and step 3 on the other end of the SAS cable.
- To connect the replacement expansion enclosure attachment
SAS cable, connect each end to the vacated ports.
Attention: The cable connector and socket are keyed and it is important that you
maintain correct alignment of the keys when the cable is inserted, as shown in
Figure 1. The blue tabs on the SAS cables must
face downwards when they are connected to
SAN Volume
Controller 2145-24F expansion canisters, and
upwards when they are connected to
SAN Volume Controller nodes.
Figure 1. Correct orientation for SAS cable connectors
- 1 connecting to an expansion port
- 2 connecting to a node port
Connecting to an expansion canister
- The SAS cables must be connected to the SAS ports with blue tabs below the connector
(that is, facing towards the bottom of the enclosure canister).
- A click is heard or felt when the cable is successfully
inserted; you cannot disconnect the cable without pulling on the blue
tag.
Connecting to a SAN Volume Controller node
- The SAS cables must be connected to the SAS ports with blue tabs above the connector
(that is, facing towards the top of the node canister).
- A click is heard or felt when the cable is successfully
inserted; you cannot disconnect the cable without pulling on the blue
tag.
- When both ends of a SAS cable are correctly connected,
the green link-LED next to the connected SAS ports are lit.
Warning: It is possible to insert the SAS cable connectors into the expansion enclosure
canister port with the blue tabs rotated upwards, without resistance. However, plugging the SAS
cables into the expansion enclosure canister port with the blue tabs rotated up or the
node canister with the blue tabs rotated down is unsupported. Errors and asserts might occur
and permanently damage the SAS adapters.
