Requirements for completing the cable connection table

The cable connection table helps you connect the units in the rack.

  1. Download the cable connection table:
  2. Go to the following website: www.ibm.com/support.
  3. Under Support shortcuts, click Plan and install documentation.
  4. In the search box, type and search for IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller Planning Information; then, click the search result.
  5. Click the appropriate link to download it to your computer.
The following terms and descriptions assist you in completing the cable connection table for the SAN Volume Controller nodes:
Table 1. Terms and descriptions
Component Requirements
SAN Volume Controller node A SAN Volume Controller node requires one or two power connections, depending on the model type. The 2145-CF8 and 2145-CG8 have two power supply units, and both must be connected; other nodes have only one power supply. Even if the node has two power supply units, both must connect to the same 2145 UPS-1U. The node is also connected to the 2145 UPS-1U with a serial communications cable.
Uninterruptible power supply The uninterruptible power supply connects to the node through a serial cable and one or two power cables, depending on the node type. Each uninterruptible power supply must have connections only to a single SAN Volume Controller node (and no other devices), and each node must have connections to a single uninterruptible power supply only, even if the node has two power supplies.

An uninterruptible power supply is connected to either an optional redundant ac-power switch, or directly to a rack power distribution unit. If connected to rack power distribution units, it is best to connect the two uninterruptible power supplies, which are required by the two nodes in an IO Group, to different power circuits. The system then continues to operate if one main circuit fails.

Note: The UPS-1U device supplies status about the main power to the 2145 node via a serial communications cable, and battery power to the SAN Volume Controller through one or two power cables. The 2145 UPS-1U is required even if input power to the UPS-1U device comes from a data center uninterruptible power supply solution.
Ethernet

The Ethernet hub or switch to which the SAN Volume Controller node is connected.

Ethernet connections are required to access the management GUI through one of the nodes in the clustered system. Point a supported web browser to one of the management IP addresses to connect from any workstation that is able to reach the system in your Ethernet environment.

Each node requires connections to the host systems. These connections can be Fibre Channel connections or iSCSI connections through the two 1 Gbps Ethernet ports per node. If the 10 Gbps Ethernet feature is installed, you can connect to the host systems through the two 10 Gbps Ethernet ports per node.

If the customers plan to use the Fibre Channel over Ethernet feature on the 10 Gbps ports, hosts need to be connected through the two 10 Gbps Ethernet ports, per node.

Fibre Channel ports 1 - 4 The Fibre Channel switch ports to which the four Fibre Channel ports of the SAN Volume Controller node are connected. When you view it from the back of the SAN Volume Controller node, the ports are numbered 1 - 4, from left to right. If you installed the optional second Fibre Channel adapter, specify where ports 5 - 8 are connected.
