Setting the Fibre Channel port mapping: 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2

When you upgrade to a 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node, you can preserve the port layout and worldwide port names (WWPNs) from the legacy node. To do so, you can change which physical ports are mapped to particular Fibre Channel I/O ports on the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node.

Determining adapter slot locations

In most cases, you can use one of the standard port mappings when you are replacing a SAN Volume Controller 2145-DH8 or 2145-SV1 that was previously upgraded from an earlier node type.

Table 1 describes the standard port mapping on a 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node. To use the table, locate the row that fully describes the location and type of Fibre Channel (FC) and Ethernet adapters in your legacy node. If you are upgrading from a 2145-SV1 node that was itself upgraded from a legacy node (2145-CF8, 2145-CG8 or 2145-DH8) then the Legacy Slot numbers in the tables below refer to the slot numbers of the previous node that was upgraded to 2145-SV1. If you used one of the pre-defined mappings for that upgrade then you can use the same mapping again to preserve the port layout.

If you set the pre-defined port mapping in the -fcportmap column, you must install the appropriate adapters in the slot locations that are shown in the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 columns. You can also install more adapters in the unused slots of the new node.

Note that 2145-SV2 and 2145-SA2 nodes do not support Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) connections. If your existing system uses FCoE then you can assign those WWPNs to native Fibre Channel ports in the new nodes.

The following examples describe how to use the table to determine the appropriate slot locations and port mapping for a new 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node.
  • If your existing 2145-DH8 node has two 4-port FC adapters that are installed in slots 1 and 2, you must install 4-port FC adapters in slots 1 and 2 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node.

To create the port mapping, specify the -fcportmap default parameter on the chvpd command.

  • If your 2145-DH8 node has four 2-port FC adapters and a WWNN value of 50050768010xxxxx, you must install 4-port FC adapters in slots 1 and 2 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node.

To create the port mapping, specify the -fcportmap dh8:2+2+2+2:801 parameter on the chvpd command.

  • If your 2145-SV1 was previously upgraded from a 2145-DH8 node that had 4-port FC adapters installed in slots 1 and 2, and a 4-port FCoE adapter in slot 5, you must install a 4-port FC adapter in slots 1, 2, and 3 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node. The WWPNs from the existing FCoE adapter will be available on the FC adapter in slot 3 of the new node.

To create the port mapping, specify the -fcportmap dh8:4+4+0+4 parameter on the chvpd command.

Note: If none of the values in Table 1 match your configuration, you can use the following web-based tool to determine the exact mapping for your system.
http://ibm.biz/portmapping

Note that 2145-SV2 and 2145-SA2 nodes support a maximum of 12 Fibre Channel ports. If your existing system has more than 12 Fibre Channel and Fibre Channel over Ethernet ports, only the first 12 are covered by the pre-defined mappings.

Notes:
  • * Most upgrades from a 2145-DH8 node that has fewer than four ports in slot 1 have different mappings, depending on the WWNN; these mappings have an 801 or 80c suffix.
  • ** This mapping does not have an 801 version. If you have this adapter configuration and a WWNN from a previous node type, contact your IBM® service support representative (SSR).

Determining the port mapping

The following sections describe how to determine the individual port mappings that are listed in Table 1. The name of each section represents the value that you specify on the -fcportmap parameter of the chvpd command.

In each table, the new_adapter_location and new_adapter_port_id values are the adapter slot and port numbers in the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node that are assigned the port mask position (fc_io_port_id) and WWPN value. You can also set port mappings for adapters that are not yet installed in the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node. These mappings take effect if an adapter is later installed in that slot location. Each table shows one of the standard mappings and the chvpd command that is required to set the port mapping.

Depending on the hardware model to which it was first assigned, the WWNN of your existing node falls within the ranges that are shown in Table 2. The method for assigning WWPNs is different for each range and is selected automatically based on the WWNN of the node. If the WWNN value of your node does not fall within one of these ranges, contact your IBM service support representative.

In the tables below new_adapter_location and new_adapter_port_id are the slot and port numbers in the new node which will be assigned the fc_io_port_id and WWPN. Each table shows one of the standard mappings with the command to set it. You can set mappings for adapters that are not yet installed and these mappings will take effect if an adapter is ever installed in that location.

Your existing node could have a WWNN in one of three ranges depending on the hardware type to which the WWNN was first assigned.

* Not this node's standard WWNN range (supported for nondisruptive upgrade from legacy nodes)
Important: You must set the port mapping in the new 2145-SV2 and 2145-SA2 node before you add it to the existing system. When you issue the chvpd command to change the mapping, the 2145-SV2 and 2145-SA2 node restarts to apply the new settings.

Port map default

Use the default port mapping if the legacy node has the following characteristics:
  • A legacy node with only 4-port FC or FCoE adapters that are installed, with the slots populated in ascending order:
    • Slot 1 only
    • Slots 1 and 2
    • Slots 1, 2, and 3
    • Slots 1, 2, 3, and 5
  • A legacy node with slots that are populated in ascending order, where only the highest slot contains a 2-port FC adapter

Port map dh8:0+4

Use this mapping if the legacy node has slot 1 empty and a 4-port FCoE adapter that is installed in slot 2.

The existing four ports are mapped to the four ports in slot 1 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node. If you install a 4-port adapter in slot 2 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node, the ports take the WWPN values that would have been used by slot 1 of the legacy node.

Port map dh8:2+2:801

Use this port mapping if the legacy node has the following characteristics:
  • Legacy node with two 2-port FC adapters that are installed in slots 1 and 2.
  • The WWNN format is in legacy mode (50050768010xxxxx), as if it was originally assigned to a 2145-CG8 or 2145-CF8 node.

The existing four ports from the two FC adapters are mapped to the four ports in slot 1 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node. If a 4-port adapter is installed in slot 2 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node, it takes the unused WWPN values from slots 1 and 2 of the legacy node.

Note: The legacy locations in the command line differ from the locations in the table because the 2145-DH8 had different WWPNs from the expected WWPNs.

Port map dh8:2+2:80c

Use this mapping if the legacy node meets the following criteria:
  • Two 2-port FC adapters are installed in slots 1 and 2
  • The WWNN format is in legacy mode (500507680c00xxxx) as if it was assigned to a 2145-DH8

  • A 4-port FC or Ethernet adapter in slot 5
  • A WWNN originally assigned to an earlier node type (50050768010xxxxx).
If a 4-port adapter is installed in slot 3 of the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node, it takes the unused WWPN values from slots 1 and 2 of the existing node.

Setting the mapping manually

The fcportmap value is built from the slot and location of each port in the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node and the slot and port locations from the legacy node. To manually set the port mapping, perform the following steps.

  1. On the node that you are upgrading, issue the lsportfc command.

The system displays detailed information about the ports on the legacy node, as shown in the following example output from a legacy node that has a 4-port Fibre Channel adapter in slot 1 and a 2-port Fibre Channel adapters in slots 2 and 5.

  4. Enter the chvpd command to create the port mapping. Specify the slot and location of each port in the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node, followed by the slot and location of each port in the legacy node, in the form AB-CD,AB-CD.
satask chvpd -wwnn 500507680100BADF -fcportmap AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD,AB-CD
For example, the following command uses the information that was recorded in Table 20.
satask chvpd -wwnn 500507680100BADF -fcportmap 11-11,12-12,13-13,14-14,21-21,22-22,23-51,24-52
  5. Optionally, you can add mappings for more ports that might be installed on the 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node in the future.

Template to manually set fcportmap values

You can use Table 21 to record information about the legacy node and the new 2145-SV2 or 2145-SA2 node.
