Upgrading a Storwize V7000 2076-524 enclosure to a Storwize V7000 2076-624

You can upgrade a Storwize® V7000 Gen2 enclosure to Storwize V7000 Gen2+ by installing two upgrade node canisters. To order these upgrade node canisters, contact your service support representative. The system remains online throughout the upgrade procedure.

Before you begin

  1. Prepare the upgrade node canisters before you begin the upgrade procedure.
    1. If your existing Storwize V7000 Gen2 node canisters have 4-port 8 Gbps or 2-port 16 Gbps Fibre Channel adapters, you must configure 4-port 16 Gbps Fibre Channel adapters in the upgrade canisters. Adapters are not included in the canister upgrade kit, but are available as a separate feature code. For information about installing and configuring ports, see Storwize V7000 Gen2 to Storwize V7000 Gen2+ upgrade: Fibre Channel port considerations.
    2. If you are upgrading from a Storwize V7000 Gen2 node that is configured with 64 GB of memory, ensure that the upgrade Storwize V7000 Gen2+ canisters have at least 64 GB of memory that is installed before you upgrade. The canisters in the upgrade kit each contain 32 GB memory. Additional memory is available as a separate feature code.
    3. If the software version on your replacement canisters is older than 7.8, the system automatically updates the software to the correct level.
  2. Prepare the system to receive the upgrade node canisters before you begin the procedure.
    1. Make sure that the system software is version 7.8.
    2. Fix any errors that are shown in the event log.

Procedure

  1. On the enclosure that you want to upgrade, find a node canister that is not the configuration node. Find this canister by using the management GUI or the lsnodecanister command. If you have more than one enclosure in the system, it might be that neither node canister in the enclosure to be upgraded is the configuration node. Make a note of the name and canister number of a non-configuration node. This node canister is upgraded first.
  2. Use the management GUI to select the canister and select Show Dependent Volumes. Alternatively, run the following command: lsvdiskdependency -node node_name, where node_name is the name of the node to be upgraded. Resolve any node dependencies before proceeding.
  3. Remove the canister from the cluster by using the rmnodecanister command or the management GUI.
Wait for this operation to complete and for the canister to be in the Service state before you continue to the next step. The canister is in Service state when the system status LED is flashing and the fault LED is on.
  4. Physically remove the Storwize V7000 Gen2 canister from the system.
  5. Remove the following parts from the original canister and install them in the upgrade canister before you install the upgrade canister into the enclosure. Install adapters into the same slot numbers in the upgrade canister that they occupied in the original canister:
    • Node canister battery
    • Compression accelerator or pass-through adapter in expansion slot 1
    • 4-port 10 Gbs iSCSI/FCoE adapter or 4-port 16 Gbs Fibre Channel adapter in expansion slot 2 or 3
  6. Install the Storwize V7000 Gen2+ upgrade canister in place of the removed node.
The upgrade canister must be prepared as described in the previous step and "Before you begin."
  7. You might need to wait as long as 45 minutes for the system to process the addition of the new canister.
When the lsnodecanister command shows the new canister, you can continue. When the upgrade is complete, the system status LED changes to solid green.
When the new Storwize V7000 Gen2+ canister is powered on, it automatically attempts to join the cluster.
  8. Confirm that the new canister joined the cluster by running the lsnodecanister command or by using the management GUI.
  9. If any I/O is taking place on the system, wait 30 minutes to ensure that the multipathing drivers are fully redundant, with every path available, and online.
  10. Repeat steps 4 - 8 for the second canister in the enclosure.
Changes are not committed to the system until both canisters are upgraded to Storwize V7000 Gen2+. At that point, the MTM for the system is updated and any new features that are associated with the upgraded hardware are made available.
  11. Update the license key.
License keys are seeded from the machine type and model (MTM) and serial number of the enclosure. Because Storwize V7000 Gen2+ has a different MTM than Storwize V7000 Gen2 , the system requires a new license key after the upgrade.
    1. Download a license key for the upgraded system from the data storage feature activation (DSFA) server.
The server is located at the following URL:

      https://www.ibm.com/storage/dsfa

    2. Use the activatefeature command to activate the license.
    3. After the activation completes, use the deactivatefeature command to remove the old license key.
  12. Apply the labels from the upgrade kit over the labels on the enclosure.
    1. Affix the small black MTM label over the MTM on the enclosure identity label that is located at the top of the left bezel.
    2. Affix the small white MTM label over the MTM on the rear of the enclosure.
    3. Affix the blank label over the MTM and serial number bar code label on the top surface of the enclosure.
    4. Remove the right bezel and affix a small white MTM label over the MTM on the label. Replace the bezel.
