Refer to the RSM for Storage - Compatibility Guide for more information. ======================================================================= 2.0 Installation and Setup Instructions ----------------------------------------- If you are using SSH to manage the RSM for Storage server from inside your network, review section 2.4 to avoid possible loss of access while applying an update. This software installs on SLES 10, SLES 10 (Service Pack 1 or 2), SLES 9 (Service Pack 3 or 4), RHEL 4 (Update 4, 5 or 6), or RHEL 5 (Update 1 or 2). Note: Service pack CDs for SLES 9 must be downloaded from Novell using the registration ID that came with your SLES 9 installation CD media. Step by step instructions for installing and configuring the Linux OS for RSM for Storage are included in the RSM for Storage "Planning, Installation and User's Guide" If you plan to use RAID 1 (Mirroring) on one of the targeted servers that have been tested with the RSM for Storage software, please see the RSM for Storage "Installation Hints and Tips" document for additional information for setup of the server BIOS and installation of the operating system. If you plan to use another System x server you can use the RSM for Storage "Installation Hints and Tips" document as a guide, but you will need to refer to the System x support web site for instructions on how to configure the server and install the proper drivers during the installation of the Linux OS. 2.1 Step-by-step instructions for installation from a RSM for Storage CD -------------------------------------------------------------------------- This procedure may be used for first time installation or updates. For SLES 9 or SLES 10: 1. Insert the installation CD-ROM in the drive. 2. A pop-up message box will report the detection of an autorun program on the CD. Click yes to begin the installation. 3. Follow the instructions in the RSM for Storage "Planning, Installation and User's Guide" For RHEL 4: 1. Insert the installation CD-ROM in the drive. 2. Right click on CDROM icon on the desktop. Select "Mount" from the pop-up menu. 3. Left click the CDROM icon to open a view of the CDROM contents. 4. Right click on the file named autorun.sh. Select "Run" from the pop-up menu to begin the installation. 5. Follow the instructions in the RSM for Storage "Planning, Installation and User's Guide" For RHEL 5: 1. 5. Follow the instructions in the "RSM for Storage - Hints and Tips" document. 2.2 Instructions for installing an update from a RSM for Storage .zip file --------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can create a CDROM and use the instructions in section 2.1, or avoid the need to burn a CDROM and download the update directly into the RSM for Storage system. This procedure should only be used to apply updates to a previously installed version of RSM for Storage. Note: In the following steps, 1.x.xx is the version number of this package. 1. Log into the RSM for Storage server as the root user. 2. Download the installation file ( ibm_sw_rsm_1.x.xx_linux_32-64.zip ) to the /packages directory in the RSM for Storage server. (You may need to disable the RSM for Storage internal firewall in order to access the file.) 3. Type: cd /packages 4. Type: unzip ibm_sw_rsm_1.x.xx_linux_32-64.zip 5. Type: cd rsm-1.x.xx 6. Type: ./rsm-setup It will take about a minute to update the software. No configuration files will be changed. 2.3 Configuration ------------------ Configuration worksheets and instructions are in the RSM for Storage "Planning, Installation and User's Guide" NOTE: This version of RSM for Storage software will require that you run the Configuration Test after installation in order for the software to identify drive expansion enclosures associated with each controller unit. After the enclosures are identified, the system configuration will indicate Incomplete and you will need to configure the IBM Product ID (or MTM) and serial number for each expansion enclosure. 2.4 Installing Updates when using a local SSH connection. ---------------------------------------------------------- If your current RSM for Storage version number is 1.12 or earlier, AND you are installing this update using a local SSH connection, follow this procedure to to avoid loss of access to the system. Starting with version 1.13, it is possible to specify the ports to be used by the RSM for Storage system for remote and local SSH connections. The software will not allow the same port to be used for both connections however and the remote access connection for IBM Service is given priority. For versions 1.12 and earlier, port 22 was used for both connections. It is necessary to assign a new port to be used for the local connection before updating from version 1.12 (and earlier) to version 1.13 (or later). 1. Edit the file /etc/rsm/rsm-firewall.conf If you are currently using SSH for local management, the following lines should be present. SSHD_ALLOWED SSHD_ROOT_ALLOWED Prior to installing this update, add a new port number to be used for local access following the SSHD_ALLOWED keyword. For example, to use 10022: SSHD_ALLOWED 10022 SSHD_ROOT_ALLOWED 2. As the RSM for Storage software is restarted after installing the update to version 1.13 or later, your connection on port 22 will be dropped, but you will then be able to reconnect to the system using port 10022. NOTE: If you wish to use port 22 for local SSH access, you will need to assign a new port number This can be configured on the Connections configuration page. As this port is used as a target for the port mapping of the RSM for Storage system from your external firewall, you will also need to change the port mapping on your external firewall to ensure that remote access continues to work for IBM Service ======================================================================= 3.0 File Descriptions --------------------- ibm_sw_rsm_1.x.xx_linux_32-64.iso - Used to create a CD which can be used for initial or update installations. ibm_sw_rsm_1.x.xx_linux_32-64.zip - Use this file only for updating an existing RSM for Storage system. - This file can be downloaded directly into the RSM for Storage system and thereby avoid the need to burn an installation CD. - See section 2.2. ======================================================================= 4.0 Known Issues and Limitations --------------------------------- N/A ======================================================================= 5.0 WEB Sites and Support Phone Number ---------------------------------------- 5.1 IBM Remote Support Manager for Storage web site: http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk/rsm/ 5.2 IBM System Storage Disk Storage Systems Technical Support web site: http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/support/disk/ 5.3 IBM System Storage Marketing Web Site: http://www.ibm.com/servers/storage/disk 5.4 You can receive hardware service through IBM Services or through your IBM reseller, if your reseller is authorized by IBM to provide warranty service.
