Overview ----------- As business data grows, storage and optimization becomes more complex. "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" (also known as "HSM Java GUI") is a solution designed to help you administer and to manage data storage from anywhere and across any platform where "IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management" (also known as Hierarchical Storage Manager or HSM) is installed. With this unique Graphical User Interface (GUI) you can view the status of any HSM managed file system including a graphical representation of the space usage of each file system. You can also add or remove Space Management to a file system, modify HSM specific file system properties, and monitor Space Management Activities just to name a few functions. "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" can be customized and the configuration can be saved to any local machine, so that the next time it starts, the customized settings are automatically applied after authentication. The "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" can be started on the UNIX machines where HSM is installed and can also be started as a remote GUI on Windows machines in order to administer multiple UNIX HSM clients from a single GUI. With only a few button clicks in this "HSM Java GUI", machines on which HSM is installed and where the "Space Management Agent" (also known as hsmagent) is running, can be added to the list of managed client nodes. This GUI is a Java application intended to replace the obsolete motif HSM GUI. For more information on how to use the "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console", please refer to the GUI online context-sensitive help that is provided in all supported languages and can be accessed by the help menu or by pressing the F1 key. Here an example how to do it: a) Login or telnet to the HSM system you would like to manage with the "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console". E.g. telnet b) Verify that the HSM version installed matches the version of the "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console". E.g. from a Solaris platform: pkginfo -l TIVsmChsm c) Verify the PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE option is used in the dsm.sys configuration file. E.g. cat $DSM_DIR/dsm.sys Please note if the DSM_DIR environment variable is not set, the dsm.sys configuration file in the installation directory is used. d) Check that the authentication of TSM server is enabled (On). E.g. dsmadmc q status e) Be sure to have the "IBM Tivoli Storage Manager" password stored locally by executing the command "dsmc q sess". In the case the password is not found locally you are prompted to set it, otherwise connection information are shown. E.g. dsmc q sess f) Check if the "Space Management Agent" is running. ps -ef | grep hsmagent | grep -v grep If the "Space Management Agent" is not running (no hsmagent process found), go to the HSM installation directory and start the "Space Management Agent" as following (see NOTE below): cd /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/hsm/bin/ hsmagent "Space Management Agent" settings, like the default port number 1555, etc. can be customized by editing the hsmagent.opt XML configuration file you can found in the HSM installation directory. NOTE: If you have set the DSM_DIR environment variable, you need to create a link in DSM_DIR pointing to the hsmagent.opt XML configuration file, otherwise the "Space Management Agent" will not start correctly. E.g. ln -s /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/hsm/bin/hsmagent.opt \ $DSM_DIR/hsmagent.opt 3.2.2 To start the "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console", either click on "Start->Programs->TivoliStorageManager-> SpaceManagementConsole" on a Windows system or run the "dsmsmj" command from a UNIX system where HSM is supported and installed. 3.2.3 A welcome page will be presented. 3.2.4 Click on "Manage Resources" on the left hand side to connect to your preferred TSM Client Node, or to create a list of your preferred TSM client nodes. Please note that in order to login to a client node, you need to specify the nodename and the password used to authenticate with the TSM server. The Save password locally check box allows you to save the password on the local machine. In order to retrieve the saved password of a client node, you must authenticate with at least one client node. 3.2.5 Selecting the root of the tree will display the list of preferred client nodes with its properties in the table on the right-hand side. A new client node can easily be added, edited or removed by clicking on the related button. 3.2.6 By selecting a client node in the tree, a table of file systems on the selected HSM node, including different attributes, will be displayed. 3.2.7 By selecting a file system in the table, different actions can be performed like adding or removing Space Management, activating or deactivating Space Management or modifying HSM specific file system properties. 3.2.8 A graphical overview of the file systems on the selected client node can be displayed by clicking the related button. 3.3 Uninstalling the product ---------------------------- - The UNIX version of the "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" cannot be uninstalled without uninstalling HSM. Please refers to the README and README.HSM files of the UNIX HSM packages for more information about uninstalling HSM. - To uninstall the Windows version open the Control Panel and double click on the Add/Remove Programs, choose or highlight the "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" entry in the list box and then click on the Add/Remove button and follow the dialog instructions. Do the same for each "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" language package is installed. --------------------- 4. Late-Breaking News --------------------- 4.1 What's new on this version ------------------------------ - National Language Support (NLS) for following languages: French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese (EUC), Traditional Chinese (BIG5). - "Space Management Activities" to monitor HSM activities on remote HSM client machines. 4.2 Known problems and limitations ---------------------------------- - Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.5.x is not yet supported. In this case a connection with the "Space Management Agent" is not possible. - Some JRE versions have problems transferring the focus to the components depending on the version of the Operating System. For example it could be that shortcuts of the menu (e.g. ALT-F to open the file menu) and Combo-boxes in a modal dialog by pressing the mouse button may not get the focus correctly. To solve that problem you need to transfer the focus manually to that component by pressing the TAB key (or CTRL-TAB) several times. - If you have set the DSM_DIR environment variable, you need to create a link in DSM_DIR pointing to the hsmagent.opt XML configuration file, otherwise the "Space Management Agent" will not start correctly. E.g. ln -s /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/hsm/bin/hsmagent.opt \ $DSM_DIR/hsmagent.opt - Changes to hsmagent.opt configuration file will be effective only after the hsmagent is restarted. - "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" needs to be disconnected from all the TSM Client Node you would like to change dsm.opt and/or dsm.sys configuration files, otherwise the previous configuration will be used. - Adding Space Management to a file system may result in showing a yellow warning icon in the "state" column of the File System table regardless whether the Master scout daemon is running. The "Space Management Agent" requires some time to update this information. - "Stub File Size" option is disabled with this version. Please use the command line as workaround to change the size of the stub file that replaces a migrated file in a HSM managed file system. - "Import Setting" menu item is disabled with this version. Customized settings like the list of client nodes, and other table view customization cannot be imported from other machines. - Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is not yet supported on this version. - Status and warning messages for Monitor, Recall, Watch and Root daemons are not yet implemented. - The functionality to change the TSM password is not yet implemented. - TSM Client Node properties cannot yet modified from the GUI. - It is not yet possible to register a new node on the TSM server. - It is not yet possible to start "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" remotely from a browser by using the "Space Management Agent". - To display the "IBM Tivoli Enterprise Space Management Console" in the system default language if it is not English, you need to have installed the related language pack as mentioned in the "Installing the product" section. - The non-root user should set the TSM system environment variable DSM_LOG to a directory with write permission (e.g. export DSM_LOG=/home/) and/or verify that the non-root user have write permission to the configuration and log files (dsmsm.cfg and dsmsm.log). - Russian, Czech, Hungarian and Polish are not localized in the JRE by Sun. For this reason some system message like "Ok", "Cancel", etc. may be displayed in English regardless whether the language pack is installed. - Some NLS messages (uil_nls.jar) are not provided for Russian, Czech, Hungarian and Polish languages. Messages affected are located in the status bar and on right clicking (filter and sorter) on the header columns of Client Nodes table and File System table. - Czech, Hungarian and Polish languages requires the following font: -dt-*-medium-r-normal-*-15-100-100-100-m-70-iso8859-2 - Russian language requires the following font: -dt-*-medium-r-normal-*-15-100-100-100-m-70-iso8859-5 --------------- 5. Getting help --------------- 5.1 Online Help --------------- Context-sensitive help is provided in all supported languages and can be accessed by the help menu or by pressing the F1 key.
